Service Recipe Guide – Volume I and II
Service “recipes,” or one-time service experiences, help Club members ask questions, identify problems, and develop Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) competencies that can be applied at school, work, home or in the community.Research shows that teaching SEL competencies fosters attachment to school and receptivity to learning – factors that are strongly linked to academic success. Additionally, SEL can increase a young person’s capacity for knowledge, responsibility, caring, productivity, nonviolence and contributions to society. SEL Competencies include self-awareness, social awareness, self-management, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. (Collaboration for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning, Education Commission of the States & Laboratory for Student Success, 2012).
Service recipes are designed to be implemented in any program area or time of year at a Boys & Girls Club. They can take place in a one hour block of time or be transformed into ongoing service learning projects. Club members of all ages – from young helpers (ages 6-10), to youth changers (ages 11-13), to our teens in action (ages 14-18) – can find their place through these activities facilitated by Club staff, teens or a combination of both.
